Child Hero Empowerment Campaign (CHEC) team is always ready to give their best, when it comes to bringing out the best in the less privileged children (destitute and orphans), by equipping them with the basic skills, knowledge and mindset every child deserves to acquire on their paths to self-discovery of purpose.

On Saturday, 24th of September, 2016, CHEC’s passion for humanity could not be contained as their monthly workshop steered them all the way to ‘The Arrows of God Orphanage Home’, in Ajah. This marked the 5th Edition of their Monthly Child Development Workshop which had as its theme: “The Future in their hands”.

The journey was however long and tough as the team and facilitators had to struggle to find their way through the bad roads, due to the rain of the past weeks– a result of which delayed the workshop for lateness and also as a result of the environmental sanitation that usually takes place on the last Saturday of every month in Lagos.

Miss Chinonye J. Chidolue, the initiator of CHEC, doing what she knows how to do best; playing with the children. |
On getting to the orphanage, there was no time to rest from the rough journey as the program started immediately, with Miss. Chinonye J. Chidolue, the Initiator of CHEC, bringing the children together with her playful gestures and opening prayer and introduction of the workshop. She succeeded in becoming their mother for the day, as they were all over her!

Mrs. Timilehin, teaching the children how to make cake. |
Mrs. Timilehin Bello, CEO of “De’bella Cakes & Glasses Catering Service”, showed the children “the future in their hands”, by teaching the Children the Art of Cake Baking. The children, who are between the ages of 5 to 16, all participated in the processing of the cake. Some of them came with their pens and papers and made notes from the tutorials.

The practical aspect of it was not left out as the children also participated in the mixing of the cake and identification of several baking ingredients. The tutorial also introduced question and answer session, to carry the children all along.
Once the cake batter was set to be baked, there was however yet another challenge: no oven to bake! This didn’t deter the promising day and the zeal of the team as a ready alternative was provided– the traditional way– the woods!

Hereon, Joshua Edeh, popularly known as Josh, an upcoming musician, and the 2
nd facilitator of the day, entertained the kids with his song and encouraged them to use their talents for the good of everyone. He performed his hit single “Right back” and several other singles from his yet to be released album. The delighted children energetically joined him in the singing and dancing.

Even though the cake took twice longer than usual to get baked, the team had to wait until 7pm, when the cake was done before leaving under dark weather which began to drizzle.

Mr. Ifenna, a Cinematographer and Nollywood Movie Director, who also came through to support the team on their 5
th edition, covered the entire event with videos, interviews with the facilitators (Mrs. Timilehin Bello and Josh Edeh) and CHEC representatives (Miss Chinonye J. Chidolue and Eneji Stephen Toluwalashe popularly known as Soul’e Rhymez).
We give God all the glory as the arrow hits its target once again on the journey of CHEC and her humanitarian activities. Against all odds, another success was recorded.
